3 Spring ’17 Trends You May Have Missed at FFANY

If you attended FFANY, there’s no doubt that you picked up on the tropical prints, the open-toe booties, the use of denim and the absence of fringe, but we’ve spotted three additional trends that may have slipped under the radar.

Spring ’17 will be a season highlighted by small details that help set one style apart from the next. Here’s a look at three trendy embellishments inspired by high-end designs to consider as you plan and prepare for next spring.

Fringe—we love you, but you’ve overstayed your welcome. After numerous seasons of fringe blanketing the fronts and heels of just about every silhouette imaginable, designers are exploring new ways to add movement to footwear. Meet the festival-friendly tassel—a bohemian version of the otherwise traditional and preppy accoutrement. Leather, suede and fiber tassels are cropping up on the ends of laces and cords, on both sandals and boots. Tory Burch proved that this trend has legs this spring with the coveted “Weaver” sandal embellished with a cascade of chunky leather tassels.

The power of Prada was evident in the number of sandals accented with silver grommets at FFANY. For Resort ’16, the Italian label embellished everything from pleated skirts to handbags and sandals with the bold hardware, inspiring a new take on ’60s mod fashion. Look for grommets to make a statement on flat, mid or low heel sandals for Spring ’17. Footwear brands continue Prada’s mod story by punctuating black leather sandals and flats with silver grommets. Or, the embellishment takes on a more mature, resort feel on white, coral, pink and teal sandal styles in brushed gold or pewter.

Could knotted straps be the next ghillie? Strappy shoes—once a style saved for prom and special occasion—have become a year-round staple in women’s casual footwear, most recently fueled by the popularity of suede or leather lace-up flats and ’70s-inspired platforms. The ghillie trend will continue into Fall ’16, but we suspect new iterations of the strappy look to come into play for Spring ’17. Expect to see flat sandals—minimal and effortlessly chic—accentuated with strands of leather or waxy rope crisscrossed and knotted over the foot. Need inspiration? High-end designer Chloé set the tone this spring with an unforgettable multicolored knotted ankle strap sandal.
